Writing a CV is a difficult task. Some people naturally do a great job of it, but we generally struggle to blow our own trumpet, even more so on 2 sides of A4 paper. However, there are a number of steps that you can take to get your years of experience effectively into your CV.

Don’t Leave Gaps

When looking at your CV, employers will notice any gaps straightaway, and generally will not give you the opportunity to explain it. So do the work for them. If you have taken a gap year or undertaken some work experience or volunteer work, make sure it’s on your CV. Often this will strengthen your case and present a better picture of you as an individual. Equally, if you have taken time off for family matters or illness, don’t be afraid to share this.

Be Punchy

Having said that, there is no bigger turn off for an employer than a novel of a CV. It doesn’t need to be a huge manuscript, keep it punchy and stick to two sides of A4 as an absolute maximum. Employers generally spend about 8 seconds looking at a single CV, so keep the rest for the interview.

Tell the Truth

Nothing is more important than this, employers will check your background and references, and even if you are not caught out during your interview, it could very well come back to bite you when you’ve started working. Lies can affect your employability far into the future, so make no mistake, telling a lie on your CV is a very bad idea.

Keep It Up-to-Date

Even if you’re not job hunting right now, it’s always a good idea to keep your CV up-to-date. It can be really hard to remember everything you have done throughout your career, so noting it at the time is a really good practice to get into.

Be Original

A standard CV keeps everything nice and easy, and you can send it out to your heart’s content. However, if you’re looking for a specific role it is always worth tailoring the content of your CV to match the role you are after. So take the time to do a little bit of research and create a CV the employer will really enjoy reading.
